Blackfoot Treaty (Treaty 7) Monument
Welcome to Soyopawahko (Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park) where Treaty 7 was signed on September 22, 1877. Here, along the banks of the Bow River, representatives of the five First Nations—the Siksika (Blackfoot), Kainai (Blood), Piikani (Peigan), Nakoda (Stoney), and Tsuut’ina (Sarcee) and the Crown came together in a historic gathering.
Guided by leaders such as Chief Crowfoot, Running Rabbit, and other representatives, the agreement established reserve lands, compensation, and continued rights to hunt and trap, while marking a profound turning point in the history of southern Alberta.
Today, this site is preserved in the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park (Soyopawahko), a cultural centre dedicated to the heritage and continuing legacy of the Blackfoot peoples.
